Week 5: Concept and Production Skills Development (Cinematography)

In this weeks workshop we looked at how to operate the track, jib and dolly creatively and also safely.

We looked at two different set ups for the jib and dolly this included one with a metal track on the ground to manoeuvre the jib and dolly which is ideally used on location shoots and the other was for studio or indoor space use, which instead of a track used wheels to manoeuvre.

There was a lot of kit involved in constructing the track jib and dolly and the operating of the kit requires at least two people; one to control the weight and balance of one end of the jib and then the other person to be controlling the other side whilst also camera operating. When adjusting the length of the jib it is crucial that the camera is taken off the jib and placed somewhere safe each time.

Communication I learnt is key when operating the kit, as there are many components and elements which could go loose or cause a serious injury. With good communication, however a lot of ambitious and creative shots can be achieved.

Overall though I think that I am now fairly confident in using this kit safely and creatively, whether that's on location or in a studio setting.

Here are some photos/media of the various components, when it comes to constructing the kit, the process and various set ups we created in the workshop today:
